PM Surya Ghar Yojana : Government of india has recently launch a new Yojana call PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijili Yojana on 15th February 2024. This Yojana is a transformative initiative aimed at promoting clean energy and providing economic relief to millions of households. With a budget of ₹75,021 crore, this yojana seeks to install rooftop solar panels in 1 crore homes across the country, offering up to 300 units of free electricity every month.  Indian Citizen of aged 18+ years are eligible to apply for PM Surya Ghar Yojana. 

What is PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?

Announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is launched to make solar energy accessible to low- and middle-income families and reducing their electricity bills. The scheme, initially named PM Suryodaya Yojana, was officially launched after its announcement during the interim budget presentation by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1, 2024. It aligns with India’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070 and accelerating the adoption of renewable energy as pledged at COP26.

The scheme provides substantial financial support, including subsidies covering up to 40% of solar panel installation costs and access to low-interest loans, ensuring no upfront financial burden on households. By December 2024, the scheme had already achieved 6.85 lakh installations, with projections to surpass 10 lakh by March 2025 and reach the 1 crore target by March 2027.

  • Substantial Subsidies: The government provides a subsidy of up to 40% of the installation cost, directly credited to beneficiaries’ bank accounts. For example, a 3 kW solar system can save households approximately ₹1,265 per month after loan EMIs, or more if no loan is availed.
  • Low-Interest Loans: Collateral-free loans at around 7% interest make solar panel installation affordable.
  • Free Electricity: Households can enjoy up to 300 units of free electricity monthly, significantly reducing or eliminating electricity bills.
  • Environmental Impact: Solar panels produce clean energy, reducing carbon emissions and supporting India’s climate goals.
  • Employment Opportunities: The scheme creates jobs in manufacturing, logistics, installation, and maintenance, with an estimated 17 lakh jobs across various sectors.
  • Support for Electric Vehicles: Solar energy can be used to charge electric vehicles, promoting sustainable transportation.
  • Model Solar Villages: A model solar village will be established in each district to promote community-level solar adoption.

PM Surya Ghar Yojana : Eligibility Criteria

  • Citizenship: Applicants must be Indian citizens.
  • Homeownership: The applicant must own the house where the solar panels will be installed.
  • Rooftop Space: The house must have sufficient rooftop space for safe solar panel installation.
  • Electricity Connection: A valid electricity connection in the applicant’s name is required.
  • Income Limit: Annual household income should be ₹6,00,000 or less, though some sources mention a stricter limit of ₹2,00,000 for low- and middle-income families.
  • Age: Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Preference: Households with a valid ration card are prioritized.
  • Exclusions: Households with pre-existing solar systems, those that have availed other solar subsidies, or commercial properties are not eligible.

How To Apply

The application process is d user-friendly, accessible through the official portal:

  • Registration: Visit pmsuryaghar.gov.in and register by selecting your state and electricity distribution company. Provide your registered mobile number and other required details and verify.
  • Login: After registration, log in using your mobile number and captcha.
  • Apply for Rooftop Solar: Click on “Apply for Rooftop Solar” and fill out the application form, including details about your electricity connection and rooftop space.
  • Vendor Selection: Choose a registered vendor from the portal, which provides information on system sizes, benefits calculators, and vendor ratings.
  • Installation and Inspection: Once approved, the vendor installs the solar system, followed by an inspection and net meter installation by the DISCOM.
  • Subsidy Disbursement: After verification, the subsidy is credited directly to your bank account.
